Stanley vs. Owala: I Own Both, But Which One Do I Actually Prefer?

I own both the Stanley and the Owala, and after using them for a while, I have a pretty clear favourite.

If you’ve spent any time looking for a new water bottle, you’ve probably come across the same two names over and over again: Stanley and Owala.

Both have become incredibly popular, both have their loyal fans, and both promise to make drinking more water a little easier. But when two products are everywhere, it can be surprisingly difficult to figure out which one is actually worth buying.

After using both, I personally prefer my Stanley more. But it isn’t simply because it became a trend or because I like the way it looks. What made the biggest difference for me was how naturally it fits into my everyday routine.

A water bottle is one of those things you might not think about very much until you have one that actually works for your lifestyle. How often you have to refill it, whether it’s easy to carry, how much water it holds, whether you actually enjoy drinking from it, and whether you remember to bring it with you all matter more than they seem.

So, Stanley or Owala? Here’s how I compare the two, and why I ultimately keep reaching for my Stanley.

That doesn’t mean I think the Owala is bad. I actually really like my Owala, and I use it for things I wouldn’t necessarily take my Stanley to. But if I had to choose one water bottle to keep, I’d probably choose my Stanley.

The reason is pretty simple. I find myself reaching for it more often, and I think that’s probably the most useful thing to know when you’re deciding between the two.

Why I Reach for My Stanley More

My Stanley is mostly my at home water bottle. It sits beside me when I’m working, I’ll have it on my nightstand, and I’ll bring it around the house with me throughout the day.

I like having a lot of water with me, and I really like being able to fill it up and have cold water sitting beside me for hours.

I’ve also had mine for over three years, so it’s become one of those things that is just part of my routine. I don’t really think about whether I should bring it with me. I fill it up and it comes with me.

There’s also something about actually liking the things you use every day. If something is sitting beside you all day, you notice it. I like the way my Stanley looks, I like drinking from it, and I like that it has become part of my everyday routine.

Where I Prefer My Owala

My Owala is different.

I tend to use it when I’m actually going somewhere, especially when I’m going to the gym, hiking, or doing something where I know I’ll be carrying my water bottle around.

The Owala feels really sturdy in my hand, which I like when I’m out and about. There’s something reassuring about carrying something that feels substantial rather than delicate.

At the same time, that’s also one of the things I don’t love about it.

Because it feels so sturdy, it can also feel a little heavy and clunky to carry around. If I’m already carrying a bag, my phone, keys, and everything else I need, I don’t always want a bulky water bottle on top of it.

So while I like my Owala, I don’t reach for it as naturally as I reach for my Stanley.

Stanley vs. Owala for Everyday Life

I think the biggest difference between them, at least for me, is where I’m going to use them.

If I’m sitting at my desk working for several hours, I’m choosing my Stanley. If I’m at home watching something, getting ready in the morning, or spending the day around the house, I’m choosing my Stanley. If I’m going to the gym, going hiking, or spending the day out and moving around, I’m more likely to grab my Owala.

That doesn’t necessarily make one objectively better than the other. They’re just bottles that fit into different parts of my life. But because I’m at home or at my desk so often, I end up using my Stanley more.

What About University, College & Work?

I think either one could work really well if you’re going to university or college.

If you’re walking around campus all day, going from lectures to the library to the gym, I can see why someone might prefer the Owala. It feels sturdy and is easy to take along when you’re constantly moving around. But if you’re studying in the library, sitting at your desk, or spending most of your day in one place, I personally prefer my Stanley.

The same goes for work. If you work from home or spend most of your day at a desk, I’d choose the Stanley. It’s the one I’d rather have sitting beside me for hours.

If you’re commuting, moving between meetings, going to the gym after work, or generally spending most of your day away from your desk, the Owala will make more sense.

So Which One Is Actually Better?

For me, the Stanley wins.

And honestly, I think the fact that I use it more is more important than trying to compare every little feature between the two.

I like my Owala. I use it. I think it’s sturdy, well made, and especially useful when I’m going to the gym or doing something outdoors.

But my Stanley is the bottle I naturally reach for.

It’s beside me when I’m working. It’s beside my bed. I bring it around the house. I fill it up in the morning and keep drinking from it throughout the day.

So if you’re trying to decide between the two, I’d think less about which one is supposedly “better” and more about how you’re actually going to use it.

If you want a bottle that will mostly live on your desk, nightstand, or beside you throughout the day, I’d personally choose the Stanley.

If you’re looking for something to take to the gym, hiking, or on days when you’re constantly moving around, I’d consider the Owala.

But if you made me choose just one?

I’d keep my Stanley.
